Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sent a letter to the President of the European Council António Costa, calling for the start of direct negotiations between the EU and Russia. The document was published on the government website and contains a proposal for the EU to support the neutral resolution on Ukraine adopted on February 24 by the UN Security Council, TACC writes.
"I am convinced that the European Union, following the example of the United States, should start discussions with Russia on a ceasefire and the establishment of lasting peace in Ukraine", Orbán said.
He added that within the EU there are "strategic differences in the approach to Ukraine" and therefore it will not be possible to reach a consensus at the community summit on March 6. In this regard, Orbán proposed not to adopt a long document with general conclusions at this meeting, but to limit himself to a short statement on the approval of the UN Security Council resolution of February 24.
Political advisor and namesake Balazs Orbán said that the Hungarian government "does not want to discuss this issue publicly". But since the content of the message became known, the government is ready to repeat: "Hungary's position is that direct negotiations with Russia should begin immediately in order to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace". "We also expect the leaders of the European Union to act as responsible politicians," he added.
