NATO's newest member Sweden plans to contribute up to eight Jas Gripen fighter jets to the defense alliance's air police in Poland, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said, quoted by "Reuters".
Stenergard said a day before the anniversary of Sweden's accession to the Alliance that her government offered to participate in NATO's air surveillance and protection of logistical operations in support of Ukraine in Poland.
"We propose that Sweden provide a maximum of eight JAS Gripen with accompanying personnel, including combat command and support units," she told a news conference.
"In addition, the government offers Sweden to contribute air and maritime surveillance capabilities and airlift capabilities," she added.
This will be the first time Sweden has provided fighter jets for NATO operations based in a country other than Sweden.
