The US has announced that it is stopping sharing what it calls “lethal“ data, including targeting data for systems like HIMARS.
At the same time, some of the “defense” information that allows the Ukrainians to defend themselves, according to sources, is still coming through. This was stated to CBS by three anonymous sources in the US administration.
The publication claims that American intelligence is still used by the Ukrainians, among other things, to detect missiles and drones, which helps to shoot them down, as well as to inform the civilian population through airstrike alerts.
According to CBS, the decision to stop sharing intelligence was made personally by US President Donald Trump.
The New York Times reports a number of details about what data Ukraine has stopped receiving from the US, what alternative sources of data it has and how long this may continue.
Data from the US Department of Defense has completely stopped coming, the former head of the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate, Valery Kondratyuk, told the newspaper. According to him, these are mostly images and their loss is not critical, since similar images are available from European satellites.
It is claimed that there is a significant CIA presence in Ukraine. Some CIA officers work at Ukrainian military bases and help select targets. They have access to CIA data and can share it with the Ukrainians.
It is also believed that the intelligence agency helped Ukraine build at least three secret bases for intercepting electronic data. These facilities continue to operate and reduce the country's dependence on American intelligence.
New York Times sources in the administration hope that the interruption in data transmission will not last long and its practical consequences will be minimal. One of them said that the initial plan was to stop the flow of information for a week or two.
Stopping the transfer of US intelligence to Ukraine
Sources from other media in Ukraine also announced that all US data had stopped coming. The information was also confirmed by CIA Director John Lee Ratcliffe. He reported that the US had taken a "pause on the intelligence front to call on everyone to talk about ensuring peace in the world".
