A 14-year-old boy has been charged with killing one police officer and wounding another last night in the US state of New Jersey, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA, citing local authorities.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene in which they saw officers running down a busy street before dozens of shots were heard.
The slain officer – 25-year-old Joseph Azcona – was part of the Newark police investigation team. He was trying to apprehend a suspected gunman when he was shot in his vehicle, authorities said.
The other officer who was shot was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Five people have been arrested in connection with the shooting, including a 14-year-old boy, and are charged with murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons, Essex County District Attorney Theodore Stevens II said.
The 14-year-old suspect was also injured in the shooting. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Stevens added.
