Time is still on Russia's side in the war with Ukraine, but in any case it must be stopped as soon as possible because it is causing enormous damage to the economy of the whole of Europe.
"Hungary is the only country that believes that time is on Russia's side", said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, speaking at the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry with a speech on economic development issues.
He notedthat the Hungarian economy had lost 20 billion EUR during the armed conflict in the neighboring country. According to him, "Hungary will not survive another 3 years of war" in Ukraine and is therefore more interested than anyone else in a quick resolution of the conflict.
“It is in the interest of our country that this war ends as soon as possible with a ceasefire and peace talks“, Orbán said in a speech broadcast on Hungarian television. He believes that the chances of concluding a peace agreement have increased significantly in connection with the coming to power of President Donald Trump in the United States and this is already having a positive impact on the economic situation around the world.
The prime minister also explained that this was one of the reasons why Hungary vetoed a statement on Ukraine at the EU summit in Brussels, which aimed to continue military operations in that country. He recalled that Budapest had not supplied weapons to Kiev and had not provided it with military assistance for three years. "To abandon this position now that the Americans have also declared their support for peace would be a crime," Orban stressed.
On March 6, at a meeting of EU leaders in the Belgian capital, Hungary refused to support a joint statement on Ukraine. It was published only as a text approved by the other 26 members of the community and will be discussed again at the next summit on March 20-21. The document states that the EU remains ready to provide Ukraine with any kind of assistance, including military assistance, and will continue to put pressure on Russia, including through sanctions.
