Five people were killed and more than ten injured in two attacks in southern Thailand, a region gripped by unrest, police said today, quoted by Agence France-Presse.

A group of more than ten attackers opened fire in front of the police district headquarters in Sungai Kolok - a town on the border between Malaysia and Thailand, at around 7 p.m. last night (2 p.m. Bulgarian time), the police said, BTA specifies.

The attackers detonated explosive devices in the attack. Two volunteers from the station's security were killed and 12 people were injured, including four civilians, Narathiwat provincial police said.

In neighboring Pattani province, an explosive placed on the road last night killed three people - a forest ranger and his two assistants. One person was injured in the attack, which took place around 11 p.m. local time last night (6 p.m. Eastern time).

Thai Prime Minister Phaetongthain Shinawatra told a news conference today that the number of security forces on night duty in the south of the country would be "significantly increased" following the attacks.
