The transitional government of Syria is a guarantor of maintaining civil peace in the country and will not allow further suffering for the people. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Assad Hassan al-Shibani at a press conference after a meeting of the heads of the Foreign Ministries, the Ministries of Defense and the special services of Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey, held in Amman.
"The government guarantees the protection of all groups of the Syrian population and will be able to maintain civil peace," he noted. Those responsible for the massacres of civilians in Latakia and Tartus will be punished.“
Earlier, the office of Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Shara announced that the head of state had formed an independent commission to clarify the circumstances that led to the escalation of violence in the coastal provinces in the western part of the country. According to a document published on the Telegram channel, it includes seven judges. The commission's mandate includes investigating "violations against civilians," "attacks on state institutions, the military, and security personnel," identifying those responsible and bringing those involved to justice.
According to the Kurdish television channel Rudaw, 120 armed supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad have been killed since the beginning of the clashes in Latakia and Tartus, while government forces have lost 93 fighters. The civilian death toll has exceeded 500. Most of the victims belong to the Alawite community, which makes up 12% of Syria's population. Al Jazeera, citing a source, reported that at least 231 members of the security services of the Syrian transitional government have been killed in the clashes.
