Protesters broke down the barriers in front of the Central Electoral Bureau of Romania (analogue of the CEC) after learning about the decision to reject Calin Georgescu's candidacy for the presidential elections, reports the Digi24 television channel, quoted by FOCUS.
"Several supporters of Georgescu, after learning about the decision, broke down the barriers set up by the gendarmerie in front of the building. The law enforcement agencies intervened and removed them, reinstalling the protective fences“, the report states.
On Friday, the politician submitted documents to the Central Electoral Bureau to register as a candidate for president of Romania. On the same day, the country's Constitutional Court received two complaints against the initiative. The day before, the Constitutional Court rejected them and said it would submit its decision to the Central Election Commission, which ultimately rejected the candidate.
He himself called what was happening "a blow to the heart of democracy around the world".
In November last year, the country held the first round of presidential elections. It was led by independent candidate Georgescu, who won 22.94% of the vote thanks to an active campaign on TikTok. Elena Lasconi, who is in favor of a stronger partnership with NATO and the United States, came in second with 19.18%. On December 6, the country's Constitutional Court annulled the voting results due to "serious irregularities", which were allegedly confirmed by declassified documents of the Supreme Security Council.
