The future Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney promised a quick transition of power, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
Carney, who was elected to lead the party of the current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and consequently the prime minister's post, had a long conversation with Trudeau. The two discussed the transition of power, which will be swift, Carney said, without specifying the date on which he will take office.
Carney and Trudeau also discussed Canada-US relations, but Carney did not go into detail here either.
According to Canadian media, Carney could take office as early as Wednesday after being sworn in by the Governor General of Canada, who represents Canada's head of state - Britain's King Charles III.
Carney is 59 years old, a former chief banker of Canada and a newcomer to politics. His election as leader of Canada's Labor Party came after Trudeau announced that he would resign in early January after 10 years in power.
The change of power in Canada comes at a delicate moment, when US President Donald Trump has hinted that Canada should become part of the US and has imposed tariffs on Canadian imports. Carney stressed that Americans should not be fooled, because in trade, like in hockey, Canada will prevail over them.
Canada will hold elections by October at the latest, and Carney's party may not come out on top.
