Polish border police have detained a Ukrainian woman sentenced in Kazakhstan to 12 years in prison for participating in an organized criminal group involved in organ trafficking. The woman is accused of illegally selling 56 kidneys, reports "Reuters", citing information from the prosecutor's office, BTA reports.
Thirty-five-year-old Ksenia P. was arrested at a railway crossing between Ukraine and Poland on the basis of an Interpol red notice, said Marta Petkowska, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in the city of Przemyśl. The Polish prosecutor's office did not specify why the convicted woman is not in prison in Kazakhstan, nor when exactly the sentence was pronounced.
The Ukrainian woman has been wanted by Interpol since November 2020. The Red Notice is an international request for the temporary detention of a person pending extradition or other legal action.
According to the investigation, Ksenia P. was part of an international criminal organization that in the period 2017-2019. illegally obtained human organs and sold them on the black market.
She was found guilty of illegally removing kidneys from 56 people in Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Thailand, and according to the prosecution, her criminal activity was a permanent source of income.
The prosecutor's office asked the court to order a temporary detention of the woman so that she could be extradited to Kazakhstan.
