Portugal's parliament has rejected a confidence vote in the centre-right minority government in Lisbon, triggering its fall after just 11 months in power, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The vote in parliament is likely to lead to early elections, the third vote in the country in just over three years.

Only 88 lawmakers supported Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro's cabinet, while 142 lawmakers voted against it.

The opposition has questioned Montenegro's integrity over deals by a consulting firm he founded, which is now run by his sons.

Montenegro's administration is now acting as a caretaker government.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will now decide whether to call new parliamentary elections after a round of consultations, which are likely to take place in the next few days.

The president has already said that the new vote could take place in mid-May.
