Construction activities begin today to reopen the Markova Noga border crossing between North Macedonia and Greece, which was closed for more than 50 years, reports MIA, BTA.
The project includes the construction of an administrative building for customs authorities, an office for an insurance company, a water tank, metal-concrete facilities, water supply and sewage, retaining walls, three road lanes and public toilets. The construction of the crossing is part of the "EU for Prespa" project.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the project is expected to be held today, with the participation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia Hristijan Mickoski, the European Union Ambassador to the country Michalis Rokas, and the Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Program Armen Grigoryan.
In an interview with MIA, Grigoryan pointed out that the construction of this border crossing was announced with the signing of the Prespa Agreement in 2018.
According to Rokas, the groundbreaking ceremony of "Markova Noga" signifies the beginning of a new era and confirmation that the Prespa region is important not only for the country, but also for Europe.
The "Markova Noga" border checkpoint has been closed for more than 50 years. Before its closure, passage through it was only possible with an ID card.
According to local legend, the checkpoint is named after the area of the same name, where a stone is located, which, according to legend, preserves the footprint of the folklore hero Krali Marko. The stone can be seen near the border checkpoint.
