The Economist: Preparations underway in Kiev for Volodymyr Zelensky's second term - 1

Ukraine is in the midst of serious preparations for President Volodymyr Zelensky's candidacy for a second term. This is reported by The Economist magazine, citing government sources in Ukraine.

According to the publication last week, Zelensky instructed his team to prepare for elections after the ceasefire.

The first confirmation is likely to come on May 5 - the deadline for parliament to vote on extending martial law, which expires on May 9. The magazine believes that its cancellation will pave the way for elections.

According to sources, the elections are scheduled for early July. Thus, Zelensky may try to surprise his rivals by conducting a quick campaign, hoping that the short deadline will allow him to run without serious opponents.

Earlier, a number of Ukrainian media outlets reported that elections in Ukraine could be held in the summer.

US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Stephen Witkoff, said that elections would be held in Ukraine, and current President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to them.

Earlier, Zelensky himself said that elections would be held only after the end of the war, and not when a ceasefire is declared.
