US President Donald Trump has told his government and close advisers that his supporter - billionaire Elon Musk - will soon leave his post in the state administration. This was reported by the American publication Politico, quoted by Reuters, reports BTA.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been appointed head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, tasked with reducing government spending. According to Politico, Trump and Musk have discussed his impending retirement in recent days, although no specific date has been set.
Musk's Expected Resignation
The White House, the Department of Government Efficiency, and Musk himself have not officially commented on the information. However, both Trump and Musk have recently hinted that the billionaire will soon leave his government post.
“I think he's incredible, but he has a huge company to run. At some point, he'll come back to it – "and he wants it himself," Trump said Monday when asked if he wanted Musk to stay in office.
The "special government employee" position that Musk holds is limited to a maximum of 130 days, with his term expiring next month.
Musk and the cost-cutting task
Last week, Trump expressed confidence that Musk would make significant progress in his bid to cut federal spending by $1 trillion.
Musk's impending departure raises questions about the future of budget-cutting initiatives, as well as his role in politics after leaving office.
