The authorities of the Republic of Korea intend to schedule an early presidential election for June 3, Yonhap news agency reported, citing government sources.
The issue of holding the election will be raised at a scheduled cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
"There are no clear legal norms that say it is necessary to hold a cabinet meeting to set the date of the election. "But since this is an important moment that will require declaring a holiday on election day, this issue will be discussed at the cabinet meeting," the agency's source said.
Earlier, South Korean media reported that the date for the snap presidential election is likely to be announced on Tuesday after a meeting of cabinet ministers. The acting President of the Republic of Korea, Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, must set a date within 10 days of the president's removal - April 14.
On April 4, the Constitutional Court unanimously removed former President Yun Suk-yeol from power due to the martial law he declared, agreeing to all five charges of the parliament.
