Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will visit Russia at the end of the week for consultations in connection with the latest talks between Tehran and Washington. This was announced on Monday by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, quoted by "Reuters", reports News.bg.
The visit is taking place against the backdrop of an intensified diplomatic campaign by Iran aimed at achieving a breakthrough in nuclear talks with the West and easing the economic pressure on the country imposed by international sanctions. Tehran is also expected to host the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, later this week.
Last week, talks between Iran and the United States took place in Oman, which both sides described as “positive“ and “constructive“. An agreement was reached to resume negotiations this Saturday.
Speaker Baghaei specified that Minister Araqchi's visit to Moscow was planned in advance, but the results of the dialogue with Washington will also be discussed during the visit.
The United States accuses Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran claims that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful, civilian. President Donald Trump has already warned that he will take military action if an agreement to limit the program is not reached.
Russia – permanent member of the UN Security Council and a long-time ally of Iran - again stressed the need for diplomatic dialogue. Last week, expert consultations were held in Moscow between representatives of Russia, China and Iran on issues related to the nuclear program.
