Indian authorities have released a list of the names of 26 people killed in a terrorist attack that took place on Tuesday in the northern union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the News18 television channel reported.
The shooting took place on Tuesday afternoon in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, which is known as "India's Little Switzerland. Armed men in khaki clothes opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran Valley.
It is reported that all the dead are men. Most of them are tourists from different regions of the country. Among them are at least two foreigners - citizens of the UAE and Nepal.
According to ANI, Indian security forces are still searching for the terrorists. The area has been cordoned off, with police and military personnel checking all vehicles entering and leaving.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia because of the terrorist attack, held an emergency meeting with a number of ministers and officials from other departments immediately after arriving in New Delhi this morning. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, who is in Jammu and Kashmir, is expected to visit the site of the attack today.
Many tourists in the region are leaving Jammu and Kashmir in a hurry. Locals have decided to organize a mass protest against such attacks - many institutions will be closed during the day.
