US President Donald Trump has proposed a peace agreement that would allow Russia to keep almost all the territories it seized from Ukraine.
The agreement is part of a seven-point plan to end the war, which does not contain clear guarantees of Ukraine's security from the US, writes the British newspaper The Telegraph.
In London, the American delegation will discuss the plan with Ukrainian representatives to get their reaction. The main point of the proposal is the official recognition of Crimea as part of Russia. This would mean “freezing“ on the current front line, leaving Putin in control of most of the occupied lands.
The Americans expect Ukraine to agree to the plan as early as Wednesday, after which Trump's special representative Steve Witkoff will present the documents to Vladimir Putin. However, Ukrainian authorities consider the proposed agreement a bitter pill, as it does not guarantee the country's security from a new attack by the Russian army.
On Tuesday evening it became known that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was supposed to participate in the negotiations, decided not to join.
Another edition – Axios also reported that the United States is expecting Ukraine's response today to the peace framework, which includes U.S. recognition of Crimea as part of Russia and an informal acknowledgement of Russian control over nearly all areas occupied since the 2022 invasion, according to sources directly familiar with the proposal.
A source close to the Ukrainian government said that Kiev views the proposal as heavily biased toward Russia: "The proposal says very clearly what tangible benefits Russia gets, but only vaguely and generally says what Ukraine will get," BTA reported.
