The ties between Europe and Canada are strong and will continue to grow stronger, said today the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election victory, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
„I look forward to working closely together both bilaterally and within the G-7. We will defend our common democratic values, promote multilateralism and fight for free and fair trade,” von der Leyen wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
European Council President Antonio Costa also stressed that the EU and Canada have a long-standing and close partnership. “We are allies and strong trading partners,” he noted in a post, adding that the two countries share the same values.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also congratulated Carney, praising his leadership on international affairs. “I know that we will continue to work closely together on defense, security, trade and investment,” Starmer said in a statement, quoted by Reuters.
