Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on giving the "historical" name "Stalingrad" to the Volgograd airport, the Kremlin press service reported.

"To perpetuate the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, I decree: to assign the historical name "Stalingrad" to the Volgograd international airport, says the text of the decree quoted in the message.

The decree also establishes that "the historical name given to the Volgograd international airport is not an integral part of the established name of this geographical object" and “does not lead to a change in the established name of this geographical object“.

The decree comes into force on the day of its signing.

Earlier, the Governor of the Volgograd Region Andrey Bocharov conveyed to Putin a request from the residents of the region, the veteran community and participants in the so-called.
