Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, agreeing to meet in person to discuss Canada-US relations, the press service of the head of the Canadian government reported.
“The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together as independent and sovereign nations“, the statement said.
“In this regard, they agreed to meet in person in the near future“. It was not specified when and where this meeting could take place.
Trump congratulated Carney on the victory of the Liberal Party of Canada, which he leads, in the snap parliamentary election held on April 28.
Earlier, Carney said that tariff negotiations with the United States would begin "literally the day after the election".
Canada's ruling Liberal Party, led by Carney, won a snap parliamentary election on Monday, but failed to secure a majority in the lower house of the country's parliament and will be forced to form a minority government.
