Extremely hot summer with droughts, floods and typhoons threatens crops in China, reports ag. Bloomberg.
In June, temperatures in the country remained above normal for those typical for the month of July. The heat is intensifying. Disasters are hitting parts of China that could fuel food inflation, destroying parts of the wheat, soybean, rice and corn crops.
Large rice fields in the south of the country were flooded, while in the north drought damaged the wheat crop and delayed the planting of corn and soybeans.
China should expect more extreme weather events in the future amid climate change, a local climate center has warned. The China Meteorological Administration has launched a new round of agricultural land zoning for the first time in 40 years to help the sector adapt to the difficult conditions.
