US may restart 3 of 13 shutdown nuclear power plant reactors - 1

Amid increased demand for electricity, the US intends to restart some of the 13 the reactors of the nuclear power plant, closed in the last decade, but only 3 of them are ready for restoration, reported ag. Bloomberg. Most of the 13 reactors of the nuclear power plant are “damaged or dismantled”.

The reactor at a nuclear power plant in Michigan is set to be turned on in late 2025. Also, plans to restart shut down reactors are being considered in Pennsylvania and Iowa. The remaining reactors in the states of California, Vermont and New York have either already been dismantled or have not been properly maintained for possible re-commissioning.

As Bloomberg notes, any reactor startup is likely to be expensive. Thus, the American administration approved the granting of 1.5 billion USD to restore the operation of a nuclear power plant in Michigan, and the state authorities promised another 300 million USD.

In August, a law went into effect in the US banning the import of unirradiated low-enriched uranium produced in Russia or by Russian enterprises. As Kyle Shostak, director of the American investment company Navigator Principal Investors, said, the replacement of Russian uranium supplies will be associated with great difficulties for American energy, and the United States will need it for many years.
