Turkey plans to put into operation the first reactor of the nuclear power plant "Akkuyu" in 2025 and start receiving up to 64 GW of electricity from it that year, according to the country's 2025 development plan approved by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

„The work on completing the construction of the nuclear power plant "Akkuyu" - the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, is ongoing, and nuclear fuel was delivered to the site in 2023. The first power unit of the power plant, which has a total installed capacity of 4,800 MW and upon completion will provide approximately 10% of Turkey's electricity needs, is planned to be commissioned in 2025”, the document notes.

In 2025, the country will get another 1,200 MW of nuclear power in addition to existing power generation capacity. In terms of total electricity production, an increase of 64 GW is planned, which is directly attributable to nuclear power plants.

In the explanatory part of the development plan, it is stated that “the construction of the “Akkuyu“ will continue, trial production of electricity will begin in the first power unit, including the relevant tests. In addition, it is stated that in 2025 the “negotiations on interstate agreements with the aim of implementing projects for new nuclear power plants” will be completed.

NPP "Akkuyu" is the first nuclear power plant to be built in the Republic of Turkey. "Akkuyu" NPP project consists of four power units with Russian VVER generation 3+ reactors. The capacity of each power unit will be 1200 MW. Construction of the Akkuyu NPP - the first project in the world's nuclear industry implemented according to the Build-Own-Operate model.
