President of the Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Moldova Liliana Vitu spoke in favor of introducing restrictions on TikTok before next year's parliamentary elections. She said this on the TV channel Jurnal TV, discussing the social network in the context of the past presidential elections in Romania.
„TikTok is a tool for manipulation and external interference in democratic and electoral processes. Talking about freedom of expression in the context of TikTok is meaningless,” said Vitsu. She spoke in favor of “urgent regulatory action”. “The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization developed and discussed the relevant bill. So far we have been working at the pace of consulting experts, but now we will probably have to speed up the work to approve it,” said Vitsu.
According to her, thousands of fake accounts were created on the platform, which were actively used to promote the Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. His leading position in the first round caused concern among the pro-Western government in Chisinau. The Chinese social network denied these claims, calling them “categorically false”.
Giorgescu is reserved about Romania's participation in NATO and is cautiously advocating normalization of relations with Russia. In particular, in connection with the events in Ukraine, he said that such conflicts are unleashed in the interest of the United States. In the second round of the elections, Moldovan authorities called on Romanians to support his opponent, the leader of the center-right party "Union for the Salvation of Romania". Elena Lasconi=
