Stopping Russian gas transit will not create problems for Hungary - 1

Kiev's refusal to transit Russian gas through Ukrainian territory from January 1, 2025 will not create insoluble problems for Hungary, which receives most of its fuel from the Russian Federation through the TurkStream gas pipeline and its branches in Bulgaria and Serbia. This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, speaking in Budapest at a press conference on the results of the year.

He noted that “energy supplies to Hungary through the territory of Ukraine are, to put it mildly, difficult“, but Budapest continues to receive gas from Russia via “TurkStream“, as well as from Romania. "If Ukraine refuses to transit gas from the Russian Federation, we will still have the necessary gas with the help of Romania and Bulgaria," said the prime minister, who visited Bucharest and Sofia on Friday. He assured that these countries have provided guarantees for the continuation of the transit and sale of gas to Hungary.

In addition, Orbán said, Hungary still does not rule out the possibility of using a scheme for importing gas that provides for its purchase at the border of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. In this case, the fuel transiting through Ukrainian territory will no longer be considered Russian, the head of government explained.
