Russia and Kazakhstan discussed the possibility of expanding the Russian side's participation in the development of oil and gas fields and in power projects, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan reported.

"On January 24, 2025, negotiations were held between the Deputy Ministers of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sungat Esimkhanov and Erlan Akenzhenov with the Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Roman Marshavin. During the meeting, the parties discussed issues of bilateral cooperation in the fuel and energy sectors, including the possibility of expanding the participation of the Russian side in the development of oil and gas fields and in projects in the power industry,“ the statement said.

Special attention was paid to the issues of cooperation in the supply of oil, oil products and petrochemicals, as well as the transit of these energy resources. The participants in the meeting expressed their intentions to continue the development of these areas and strengthen the energy partnership between the two countries, the report noted.

In 2021, Russia's Lukoil and Kazakhstan's "KazMunayGas" signed a binding agreement on the basic principles for the large-scale Kalamkas-Sea project in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea. According to current plans, work on the construction of offshore platforms at Kazakh shipyards will begin in 2026 to ensure the earliest possible start of production at the Kalamkas-Si field. The project is planned to attract more than 6 billion USD in direct investments.

"Lukoil" has been operating in Kazakhstan since 1995. Together with the Kazmunaigas oil and gas company "Lukoil" participates in the Karachaganak, Tengiz, Zhenis, Al-Farabi projects, in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium oil transportation project, as well as in joint ventures for the development of the Khvalynskoye and Central fields, Kalamkas-Sea and Khazar.
