Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta believes that US President Donald Trump represents a "deadly challenge" for Europe.
According to him, Washington's latest steps in the trade sphere show that Trump will do everything he promised during his election campaign. “Unlike the first term, it is clear that he has prepared and has a project that is an alternative to the existence of the EU as a multilateral organization“, Letta said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. “Now we understand that Trump is a deadly challenge to our project and we must act accordingly.“
As for the possible introduction of US tariffs on European goods, the former prime minister specified that Trump knows how to harm the EU. “Europe is a union of states and has many internal problems both at the national and supranational levels. Thus, economic aggression from abroad can be very dangerous for Europe, which is extremely unbalanced between its territories”, explains Leta.
Earlier, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, citing sources, reportedthat the head of the Washington administration is considering the possibility of imposing a 10% tariff on all imports from the EU. According to one of the sources, there is still no full agreement within the administration of the American leader on this issue.
