Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez assured that the European Union is ready to defend the interests of the single market.

The diplomat made this statement against the backdrop of Washington's intention to introduce 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum supplies to the US. "The European Union is ready for any unforeseen circumstances and to defend the interests of the EU and the single market," the head of the Foreign Ministry told journalists. At the same time, he said, "it's hard to comment on what is currently just a statement."

US President Donald Trump earlier said he intended to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the US on February 10. He also promised to consider possible 10% tariffs on goods from the European Union.

On February 1, Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. The document provides for a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian energy resources), as well as an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. Later, the US leader suspended the tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico for a month after talks with the leaders of these countries. On February 4, US tariffs on imports from China came into effect.
