The US administration may impose tariffs of 245% on imports from China amid the escalating trade confrontation between the countries, the White House press service reported.
The US administration's statement contains a reminder that in early April, US President Donald Trump imposed 10% tariffs on all countries and individually increased tariffs on countries “with which the US has the largest trade deficit“. In this way, the president wanted to “level the playing field and ensure America's national security”. Subsequently, more than 75 countries around the world “have already entered into negotiations” with Washington to resolve the situation and "make new trade deals".
“Amid these discussions, the introduction of individual tariffs was suspended, with the exception of China, which took retaliatory measures. As a result of China's retaliatory measures, it now faces tariffs of up to 245% on imports from the United States,“ the statement said.
The White House did not provide details on the timing or configuration of the tightening measures.
