If we succeed in establishing and developing successful economic cooperation with Singapore, the establishment of an embassy will be a natural next step. President Rumen Radev said this to the Bulgarian community in Singapore. The head of state is on a working visit to the country, and on November 24 he will leave for an official visit to Vietnam.
Our diaspora in Singapore occupies a very special place among the Bulgarian communities abroad, because it is the most highly educated diaspora. There are leading specialists in their fields here, starting with finance, information technology, high technology, business, culture and sports, commented the president.
Diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Singapore were established on November 21, 1967, according to information from the "Reference" department. of BTA. In 1970 Bulgaria opens a diplomatic office in Singapore, headed by a temporary ruler. In the period 1971 – 1973 the Bulgarian ambassador in Tokyo is accredited in Singapore, and since 1974 until 1980 – the ambassador of Bulgaria in India. Since 1980 until now, the ambassador of Bulgaria in Indonesia is accredited in Singapore. Until November 9, 1989. the ambassador of Singapore in Moscow is also accredited to Bulgaria. Since then, there has been no accredited ambassador of Singapore to Bulgaria. Currently, Singapore maintains a small number of diplomatic missions abroad and currently does not have an ambassador accredited to Bulgaria. In 2022 marked 55 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Singapore.
In Singapore, the president is accompanied by representatives of Bulgarian business from the fields of information and high technologies, defense, the automotive sector, engineering, etc. The delegation led by him includes the ministers of the caretaker government: of education and science Galin Tsokov, of innovation and growth Rosen Karadimov and of tourism Evtim Miloshev, as well as mayors of Bulgarian municipalities. The President was accompanied by his wife Desislava Radeva.
Singapore has a population of just over six million people. The territory of the country is 735 sq. km. Singapore is a parliamentary republic. The head of state is the president, elected through direct elections for a term of six years with the right to be re-elected an unlimited number of times. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam takes office on 14 September 2023.
