There is one norm in the Bulgarian Documents Act that has not been repealed. According to it, when traveling abroad, children must have the consent of both parents. This was said in an interview for the program “This Sunday“ on bTV, Prof. Veselin Vuchkov, the former interior minister (in the “Borisov 2“ cabinet) and professor of criminal procedural law Veselin Vuchkov.

His comment is in connection with Bulgaria's entry into Schengen on January 1 and the abolition of border controls with our neighboring countries Romania and Greece.

The advice of Prof. Vuchkov's advice to parents traveling abroad with their children is to have a declaration while this norm is in effect.

“Colleagues from the Directorate “Bulgarian Identity Documents“ and the entire Ministry of Interior are considering whether such a norm is necessary“, the former Minister of Interior specified.

Recently, the Ministry of Interior announced in connection with cases involving children's travel in the Schengen area: “In the event of a dispute between parents on these issues, the dispute shall be resolved by the district court at the child's current address“.

A single register for the regime for taking children to Schengen is not possible due to the different legislation of the countries, lawyers specify.
