Honda has unveiled a new generation of hydrogen fuel cells, which is called the Next Generation Fuel Cell Module and is twice as powerful and 50% cheaper to produce. The innovative module develops 150 kW of power, which is almost twice as much as the previous version (78 kW), created in conjunction with General Motors.
Technological improvements and key features:
Increased power: 150 kW versus 78 kW in the previous version.
Extended output voltage range: 450-850 V, ensuring compatibility with 800-volt electric vehicles and hybrid platforms.
Increased efficiency: The efficiency factor (EFC) is increased from 56.8% to 59.8%, which allows for more energy-efficient fuel use.
More compact dimensions: The volume of the module has been reduced from 557 to 300 liters, which significantly simplifies integration into vehicles of different classes.
Power density: Increased from 0.14 to 0.50 kW/L, a significant breakthrough in fuel cell technology.
Durability: The fuel cell's lifespan has been increased by 66%, making it more reliable and cost-effective for commercial use.
Honda plans to begin mass production of the new fuel cells in 2027. Although the company has not yet revealed which models will receive the innovative powertrain, experts suggest that the technology will be applied in future hydrogen sedans, SUVs and commercial vehicles. Honda also plans to expand the use of these modules for stationary energy solutions and heavy-duty vehicles.
The new technology makes Honda one of the leaders in the development of hydrogen systems, paving the way for mass electrification using environmentally friendly energy sources.
