Over 90% of the breakdowns caused by the heavy snowfall in Western Bulgaria at Christmas have already been resolved. Work continues on single addresses on the low-voltage network, as well as in remote settlements and hard-to-reach mountainous areas.
Efforts are focused on the Lovech region and the area around Samokov, which were most severely affected by the snow. Nearly 30 additional emergency teams were redeployed there on Friday to deal with the damage caused by trees falling under the heavy snow and strong winds and by the icing of wires as a result of the drop in temperatures.
A total of over 150 ERM West teams participated in the removal on December 24-27, 2024. They cooperated with local authorities, state and local structures to remove the accidents as quickly as possible. Their work was hampered by impassable roads and high snowdrifts in mountainous areas and small settlements.
About 95% of the accidents were caused by tall trees falling on power lines, which are located outside the easement zones and ERM West does not have the right to remove them. A change in the regulatory framework to increase the easement areas of power lines will significantly reduce the accident rate and prevent prolonged power outages.
