Ivaylo Kalfin: We must stop forming coalitions without a program - 1

We are already waiting for anything, just to have a cabinet. In fact, the important question is what a government would do. And this is exactly what should be in the negotiations, which are extremely opaque and non-public. In the end, some kind of summary will surely come out. It is important for all of us if there is a government - what policy it will pursue, what it will stand behind, what goals it will set for itself. This was explained in the program “Crossroads” on NOVA by former Deputy Prime Minister and Social Minister Ivaylo Kalfin, who is currently the Executive Director of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.

He also commented on the question of whether a coalition is formed between the four parties participating in the negotiations - will it be stable.

Look at what is happening all over Europe - coalitions are stable. The fact that it is a coalition does not mean that it will not be stable. In our country, coalitions fall apart when their political programs are not clearly outlined. When they write some common goals - to enter Schengen and the eurozone... it turns out that we can enter Schengen with a caretaker government. These are not political topics. They are different - to eliminate poverty, to reduce the number of children who drop out of school by 50%. The topic could be to help half of young people buy a home - something that is being done all over Europe at the moment. There must be some specific goals that this government stands behind, so that they are clear to the people. And then the government is more stable, because it must achieve the goals it has announced, Kalfin commented.

According to him, there is no government that can truly lead and achieve results by making only popular decisions.

„Inevitably, there are measures that will not please everyone. And this is the problem with these short-term governments that we have had in recent years. But this does not mean that the next government will necessarily deal only with problems. Increasing taxes and social security contributions is a very possible option, but it can be achieved if the goals are set and why exactly they are being increased? What do we want to achieve with them? What is the ultimate goal? Not for next year to fill the budget, but for the next few years. What do we want? Do we want to change the quality of life of Bulgarians? With what parameters do we measure this quality of life? This is the important conversation. Then come the taxes and, accordingly, the budget“, Kalfin emphasized.
