We will continue to insist that salaries in the Ministry of Interior be updated. This was said by Minister of Interior Daniel Mitov in Svilengrad. An agreement was signed there to begin work by a joint contingent from Bulgaria, Austria, Romania and Hungary to guard the Bulgarian-Turkish border, BTA reported.
According to him, the increase in salaries in the Ministry of Interior is not a privilege, but is even overdue. If we want people in the security sector to work confidently, with self-confidence and to be calm, their salaries must be updated, as provided for by the law. I hope that the majority in the National Assembly will support the project to increase salaries in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he emphasized.
When asked about reforms and expected optimization in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Daniel Mitov pointed out that from 2009 to 2024, 15,000 staff positions were cut, while at the same time, responsibilities in the Ministry of Internal Affairs have not decreased, but new ones have been added. Therefore, I suggest that before we talk in generalities, we think, make a sober assessment and only then see what exactly can be optimized, said Daniel Mitov, adding that this does not mean that there is no room for discussion about optimization and improvements in the system.
In this context, the minister emphasized that currently, about 50,000 employees are engaged in the Ministry of Interior system. Mitov indicated that he has already requested a report on the number of people of retirement age who are serving in the ministry. From what I know so far, these people are in key positions and other people must gradually be prepared to fill them, the minister indicated. According to him, the Ministry of Interior is operating at the edge of its capacity in terms of its assigned responsibilities. No matter what happens, the Ministry of Interior is sought - for an opinion, for a reaction or for an inspection, and this is not a job that can be done without people, emphasized Mitov.
