The Supreme Judicial Council announces with deep sorrow the passing of Velyo Velev – former prosecutor and member of the Supreme Judicial Council in the period 2007-2012.
His long career in the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria began in 1991, where he retired in 2020 as a prosecutor in the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office.
By decision of the Supreme Judicial Council under protocol No. 17/20.05.2020, he was awarded the distinction “personal badge of honor, first degree - gold“ for demonstrated high professionalism, impeccable and exemplary performance of official duties and high moral qualities.
Velyo Velev will be remembered as an honest and good man, an exceptional professional and colleague, defending his positions until the end. He was devoted to law and the prosecutorial profession, and as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council he uncompromisingly defended the interests of the judicial system.
The members of the Supreme Judicial Council express sincere condolences and join in the grief of his family and loved ones.
The funeral service will be held on February 15, 2025 at 9:45 a.m. in the church “Vazdvizhenie na Svetiya Krust Gospoden“ in the “Lozenets“ quarter, Sofia.
