In recent weeks, public attention has focused on another scandal that has shaken the security structures in Bulgaria. A signal revealed alleged chats between senior officials from the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP) and police officers in the field from Plovdiv, which fueled suspicions of an umbrella over smuggling channels.
"There have always been some umbrellas. One of the strongest umbrellas in the Ministry of Interior is political influence. It has long begun to dominate the management of the ministry and police activity, which should be independent from the point of view of facts and justice. The criminal world has always sought to have some umbrellas. This is also understandable. Nothing new under the sun", commented the former head of the National Security Service, Gen. Rumen Milanov in the studio of "Denyat ON AIR".
He stressed the need for clarity on whether this is a controlled operation or sabotage of a real action against crime.
"We must distinguish facts from conjectures. Arguments should be put on the table - from both sides", Gen. Milanov urged on the air of Bulgaria ON AIR.
The guest raised the issue of salaries in the system – why do the management team receive the highest salaries, while field employees remain with low incomes? He expressed the opinion that increases should be based on results and loyalty – not to the chief, but to the law.
Currently, according to information from the parliament, hearings of the police officers involved are being prepared. The MPs are demanding access to classified information on the case in order to conduct an objective analysis.
Gen. Milanov is categorical that the facts must be carefully checked before undertaking mass purges that can destroy professional careers without reason.
