Hungary and Italy build port on Adriatic Sea - 1

"Hungary is starting the construction of its own port on the Adriatic coast near Trieste on land leased under an agreement with the Italian government," announced Hungary's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Levente Magyar, recalling that negotiations between Budapest and Rome on this issue have been ongoing for several years.

"The port is expected to operate at full capacity in 2028," MTI quoted him as saying. The deputy foreign minister, who visited the construction site on February 20, said that Hungary will be able to use 650 meters of coastline for this. According to him, port facilities and a large logistics center will be located on an area of 30 hectares.

The creation of its own seaport will help Hungarian companies expand their trade operations on the world market. “Hungary must have channels through which it can most effectively connect to global supply chains, create new jobs, increase the return on its exports and help national companies operate“, the diplomat explained.

It was previously reported that the project to build a port in Trieste will be implemented by the company Adria Port, which is fully owned by the Hungarian state. It is controlled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations. Investments in the project are estimated at several hundred million euros.

Hungary lost its only seaport - Rijeka, located in present-day Croatia, after the defeat of Austria-Hungary in World War I. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was among the ten largest commercial ports in the world. Since 2001, Hungary has been granted the right to use Rijeka as a free port, i.e. as a duty-free zone for the import and export of goods.
