Australian cyclist Lucas Plapp has undergone abdominal surgery following injuries sustained during the road time trial event at the Games in Paris, the country's federation announced.
The statement said that Plap crashed because of the rain and the extremely slippery surface for that reason, and the footage – distributed on social networks show that he slipped under the guardrail while falling.
The federation added that when he was picked up from the road, he was "conscious and moving normally" but had to withdraw from the race. Plapp was taken to hospital in a "stable condition and"underwent abdominal surgery overnight at a Paris hospital with a very reputable surgical department.
"At the moment we have no further details from the doctors,", the Australian federation said, without explaining whether he will be able to compete next Saturday in another road race.
The time trial saw several falls for both men and women, all due to the slippery road, with American Taylor Neeb even falling three times.
