French police have launched an investigation into death threats made against three Israeli athletes participating in the Paris Olympics, it said today, the office of the Paris prosecutor's office, quoted by France Press, conveyed BTA.
Officers from the cybercrime unit are also investigating Friday's leak of athletes' personal data on social media and are trying to remove it, prosecutors said.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned his French counterpart Stephane Sejournay on Thursday of a possible Iranian-backed plot to target Israeli athletes and tourists during the Olympics.
Israeli athletes at the Games are escorted to and from competition by elite police units and are provided 24-hour protection throughout the Olympics, officials said. Israel's Internal Security Service "Shit Bet" also helps ensure the safety of Israeli Olympians.
