The German football league has asked clubs to observe a minute's silence before the start of Bundesliga and second division matches this weekend in memory of the victims of the Magdeburg Christmas market attack. The league also said players must wear black armbands, DPA reported, BTA reported.

At least five people have died, including a child, while around 40 are in serious condition after a car ploughed into a crowd last night. Some local media outlets reported that the number of injured was over 200.

The Magdeburg football club expressed its condolences after the news broke during their 5-2 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf in a second Bundesliga match, prompting both sets of fans to end their support.

"We are still shocked and mourning the victims of the terrible attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market. Our thoughts are also with the many injured and with all the affected families and their loved ones. We would like to thank the many volunteers who are helping in these difficult times. Due to the terrible events, we will not be publishing any further news for the time being," the football club said in a statement.
