Manchester United knock Arsenal out of FA Cup on penalties - 1

Defending their trophy in the FA Cup tournament, Manchester United eliminated the most successful team in the competition, Arsenal, with a 6:4 victory on penalties. In regular time and extra time, the match ended 1:1, and from the 57th minute, the visitors from Manchester played with a man less due to a red card for full-back Diogo Dalot, BTA reports.

Despite their reduced squad and despite Arsenal receiving a penalty in regular time with the score 1:1, the visitors survived with a brave defensive game and fully deservedly found a place in the fourth round of the oldest football tournament in the world.

Manchester United opened the scoring in the 52nd minute through their captain Bruno Fernandes. A blunder in midfield by Gabriel Magalhaes allowed Alejandro Garnacho to steal the ball and create a three-on-two counterattack. The Argentinean navigated the situation well and passed it to Bruno Fernandes, who, with a right-footed shot, left no chance for David Raya.

In the 61st minute, however, referee Andy Madley decided to send off Diogo Dalot for a second yellow card. Madley judged that the Portuguese full-back's actions were dangerous and, although there was no contact between him and an Arsenal player, it was enough for a second yellow card. Immediately after the foul, a scuffle broke out in the penalty area, during which Gabriel Magalhaes shot, the ball deflected off Matthijs de Ligt and entered the net of Altay Byander for 1:1.

In the 70th minute, Madley awarded a penalty kick in favor of Arsenal, which was, to put it mildly, exaggerated. In the absence of the video assistant referee (VAR), the referee judged that Harry Maguire tripped Kai Havertz in the penalty area. However, replays showed that it was a classic simulation on the part of the German, but the penalty could not be canceled.

The home team captain Martin Odegaard stood behind the ball, who shot low into the right corner, but Byander made a brilliant save.

Minutes followed in which the Turkish goalkeeper had one chance after another, but incredible misses by Havertz kept the score unchanged. This was the situation in the first of the two 15-minute extra time periods, in which De Ligt cleared the goal line once.

At the start of the second extra time, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made a key intervention to block a shot by Joshua Zirkzee from the edge of the penalty area.

By the end of the 120 minutes of the match, there was no new clear goal opportunity, which led to the execution of penalties.

In their case, Byander was again the hero for the guests, after saving Kai Havertz's shot. All other players who took the penalty scored, with Zirkzee scoring the winning penalty for the visitors.

In the other matches played in the afternoon window, Newcastle beat lowly Bromley 3-1, Crystal Palace beat Stockport County 1-0 and Ipswich beat Bristol Rovers 3-0.
