Manchester United's youngest ever player, who made his debut aged 16 years and 19 days in 1956, has died today at the age of 84, the club said in a statement.
David Gaskell, who was a goalkeeper, came on as a substitute in the city derby with Manchester City at the "Maine Road" stadium in October 1956, barely 16 years old, after regular keeper Ray Wood was injured. But despite his tender age, Gaskell kept a clean sheet and United won the match 1-0 to win the "Charity Shield".
Gaskell remains at the "Old Trafford" stadium this moment for 11 years and made an incredible match in the FA Cup final in 1963. Then at the "Wembley" stadium, the United team won the trophy after a 3-1 victory over Leicester City.
On their official website, Manchester United wrote: "All of us at the club are deeply saddened by the passing of David Gaskell – our youngest debutant, our former goalkeeper. We express our condolences to his family and friends and join in their grief".
