Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso broke another personal record in the Bundesliga, winning 2-0 away against Holstein Kiel to become the longest unbeaten away league coach in the league - 28 matches, DPA reported. He thus surpassed Udo Latek's record with Bayern Munich and Schalke, who were unbeaten in 27 away matches, the Bundesliga website reported.
The Leverkusen team's last away league loss was in May 2023, when the team lost 0-3 to Bochum. Bayer has only lost one Bundesliga game since then - 2-3 at home to RB Leipzig in August 2024.
When asked about the record, Alonso said: "We have developed a winning mentality and these achievements show it. We are efficient, stable. We want to show these qualities again when we visit Frankfurt next."
Leverkusen also announced that the success made Alonso the first coach in the club's history to win against every opponent he has faced in the Bundesliga - 21 in total. The team is five points behind leaders Bayern, who host Eintracht Frankfurt later in the day.
