Roberto De Zerbi is considered one of the most promising young coaches in world football, and his path to the European elite began in Serie A.
After attracting attention with his exciting style at Sassuolo, the Italian continued his career at Shakhtar Donetsk and later took over Brighton and led them to their first ever Europa League appearance. He is currently impressively leading Marseille in Ligue 1.
Last summer, the French club paid his €6m release clause to sign him. With his signature attacking but risky style, De Zerbi led the team to second place in the standings, ahead of the likes of Lyon, Nice and Monaco. However, after the defeat to PSG at the weekend, the title now seems out of reach, as Marseille are 19 points behind the top.
The club's management has a three-year contract with him and so far everything is going according to plan. He has received serious support in the transfer market, with Marseille attracting players such as Amine Guiry, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Adrien Rabiot.
However, De Zerbi's name is once again starting to be mentioned for leading positions in Italian football, reports Daniele Longo of “calciomercato.com”. Juventus are closely monitoring his development and if they decide to part ways with Thiago Motta, De Zerbi is among the favourites for the job.
In addition, the 45-year-old coach has a special relationship with Milan, having said more than once that this is the club of his heart. The opportunity to take over the “Rossoneri” would be a challenge he would take on with enthusiasm. However, such a move would depend entirely on the Milan management and especially on the club's next sporting director.
For now, De Zerbi remains at Marseille, but with the growing interest from Italy, it is not a question of if, but when he will return to Serie A.
