You must not shift the automatic transmission into neutral while driving - 1

The neutral gear in an automatic transmission is a type of safety device that prevents the driver from accidentally switching between direct and reverse gears. In classic transmissions, mechanical protection is activated, preventing damage to the automatic gearbox.

In more modern automatics that implement the Shift by Wire control mode, it is no longer possible to switch between reverse and forward gears. Tow drivers should be aware that the use of neutral gear is only intended for towing a vehicle for short distances or in the event of an emergency.

Under no other circumstances should you shift the transmission into neutral, and this is absolutely not recommended when braking. Many people think that this protects the transmission and saves fuel, but this is not the case. This manipulation does not affect the wear of the unit and does not save gasoline, the experts conclude.
