Kia is preparing a new 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. At a presentation for investors, the Korean company's management confirmed the development of this unit, which will be based on the 2.5T-GDI engine. The gasoline engine will be 12% more powerful than the current version, and efficiency will increase by 5%. The new unit will be used in Kia's gasoline-electric drives, including in serial hybrids.
The current 2.5T-GDI engine in its most powerful version produces 294 horsepower and 422 Nm of torque. The new unit is expected to develop about 330 horsepower. But there’s something more important about hybrids: thanks to the improved connection between the electric motor and the internal combustion engine, the transition from one power source to another will be seamless, and acceleration will be more efficient.
There’s no information on the debut date of this promising new unit. But the new engines could help Kia achieve its goal of increasing annual sales to 4.19 million units by 2030.
In 2024, a record for the Korean brand, Kia sold 3.1 million units, which means Kia intends to grow by at least six percent annually over the next six years. To achieve the ambitious goal, 15 new electric vehicles and ten hybrids will be launched within five years. Kia’s forecast for 2030 suggests that non-hybrid models will account for 44% of sales.
