For several years, Honda has promised to start producing solid-state batteries for electric cars. On November 21, the company unveiled a demonstration production line for the first time as it continues to refine its promising new battery technology.
The line is located at Honda's research and development facility in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Honda will use the demonstration line as a prelude to mass production while determining the basic specifications of the battery cells.
The new demonstration line replicates the processes required for mass production. It covers an area of 27,400 m2 and is already equipped with instruments to check every production process, including weighing and mixing of electrode materials. The line also supports cell formation and assembly of the finished module.
Honda plans to start production of the new demonstration line in January 2025. To speed up development, Honda is conducting "rapid research" in two main areas: material specifications and manufacturing methods.
