EU condemns all attacks on UN missions, spokesman said European diplomacy Josep Borrell in connection with the attacks of the Israeli army against the Multinational UN Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
"Such attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international law and are absolutely unacceptable. These attacks must stop immediately," Borrell wrote in a statement on behalf of the European Union. He emphasized that "the EU condemns all attacks against UN missions".
Brussels "expresses particularly serious concern regarding the attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) against UNIFIL, in which several peacekeepers were injured,", the text added.
Israel disputed some UN reports on incidents involving peacekeepers in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said UN peacekeepers were providing "human shields" of fighters from the group "Hezbollah" in the context of intensifying hostilities.
Borrell notes that "all participants" in conflict have a duty to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property. "We urgently expect from the Israeli authorities an explanation and a thorough investigation into the attacks against UNIFIL, which play a fundamental role in the stability of southern Lebanon," added Borrell.
